Local dimming is an advanced LCD backlight control technology. It divides the LED backlight into multiple independently controllable areas and dynamically adjusts the brightness of each area according to the content of the image, achieving a precise light control effect of “darkening dark areas and brightening bright areas.” Compared with traditional global backlighting solutions, local dimming significantly reduces light leakage, presents deeper blacks, higher peak brightness, and superior overall contrast, especially in HDR display scenarios.

Unlike self-emissive display technologies such as OLED (where each pixel can emit light independently), traditional LCD displays rely on uniform backlighting. When backlight continuously covers the entire screen, blacks in dark scenes often appear only as dark gray, significantly limiting image detail.

Local dimming technology solves this problem by using “zoned backlight control,” drastically reducing backlight in dark areas and precisely enhancing backlight in bright areas, thus significantly improving overall contrast.

Local dimming technology is divided into:

  • Full Array Local Dimming (FALD): This method uses a large number of LED backlight areas evenly distributed across the entire backlight of the screen, providing relatively precise local brightness control. It is typically used in high-end televisions.

 

  • Mini-LED Local Dimming: This method uses smaller LEDs, significantly increasing the number of backlight zones, thus achieving a more refined brightness adjustment effect. This technology is common in high-end display devices and can achieve contrast performance close to OLED.
